More than 2000 injury claims for run-ins with phoenix palms in last three years
Phoenix palm trees, with their poisonous, stabbing frond spikes, continue to take a heavy toll on Kiwis.
In 2016, a search of ACC claim form records for possible phoenix palm spike injuries revealed 644 claims at a cost of $193,029. This was up from 577 claims in 2015 and 622 claims in 2014.
According to the latest ACC data, this has continued to rise in the last three years.
There were about 741 claims in 2019, totalling $380,145. This was up from 690 claims in 2018 and 666 claims in 2017 at a cost of $422,552 and $397,265 respectively.
