Nelson drivers not getting the message on distracted driving
Police say Nelson motorists are not getting the message about the dangers of using a cell phone while driving.
During a road safety operation in Nelson city this week – conducted over two hours on Tuesday and Wednesday – 50 drivers were issued infringement notices for using cell phones while behind the wheel.
Tasman Road Policing Manager Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews said it was an “extremely disappointing” result.
Andrews said there was widespread blatant use of phones while driving, either making phone calls, texting, or browsing social media.
“People think it’s ok [to use their phones] when they are slowing down in traffic, but it’s a significant distraction.
“While driving people need to put their phones on silent or just put them away and out of reach.”
