These guidelines aim to encourage a safe and standardised approach to major trauma care based on principles of best practice. They have been developed by Midland Trauma System with close input and collaboration by colleagues from the Midland District Health Boards.
The guidelines reflect the language of Emergency Management of Severe Trauma (EMST), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Definitive Surgical Trauma Care (DSTC) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) with an added section that describes agreed processes for referral of patients throughout the region: the ‘Midland Trauma Matrix’. Individual DHB’s have different volumes of trauma patients, geographic challenges, resources and staffing levels, therefore the guidelines must be interpreted with these factors in mind.
