Trauma surgeons want e-scooter rules, footpath speed limit considered
Trauma surgeons tasked with patching up people who come a cropper on e-scooters say there’s an urgent need for regulation.
A footpath speed limit is a key option being considered at Government level and, if approved, is likely to be in place by mid-2020.
E scooters may be environmentally friendly and fun to use but crashes and falls are causing severe injuries similar to those from car crashes, Auckland-based surgeon Li Hsee said in a statement.
“There need to be clear and consistent rules around the use of helmets, age limits, no drunk or drugged riding, only one person per scooter at a time and a late night curfew,” the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ (RACS) New Zealand Trauma Committee chair said.
